South
Africa - Day 7
Wednesday 28th January 2026
Participants: Kev & Tam
Awake just after 7.00 am and get up at
8.00 am to find Tam has been awake a while and is on her phone
checking every corner of the internet to ensure she hasn't missed
something. This is our last day in Cape Town and we're doing the
blue route on the hop on hop off bus. After a breakfast of
omelette for me we walk to the V&A to pick up the bus.
After a pleasant tour round on the bus we get off at Kirstenbosch
Botanical Gardens. Entrance fee is around £12 and it's quite a
large area with the mountains providing a beautiful backdrop.
It's very beautiful and we do the tree canopy walkway and various
other paths. Unfortunately most proteas etc have gone over
but it's picturesque and peaceful as we wander around.

Back on the bus to our next destination.

We change buses at Constantia for the smaller vehicle that takes us to Groot Constantia, the oldest vineyard in South Africa. We have a wander around taking photos but don't bother with a visitor ticket as we have a table reserved for 1.15pm. We split a special of panko fishcakes with masala sauce then each enjoy a chicken caesar salad. This we wash down with a lovely carafe of chardonnay. Sitting outside enjoying the views with the sun beating down we're very happy. It's not the best meal we've had so far, but the setting is lovely and wine on a sunny day is a joy at any time.

Back on the bus we get off at Beau Constantia, another wine farm. This is a much more modern place, but it's absolutely beautiful with rolling slopes of vines in every direction and a lovely undulating lawn. We take some photos and then pay a visit to the 'loo with a view'. Tam says she could sit there all day.

The loo view.
We go up to the tasting room to check in for our prebooked 3pm tasting, but we're early and they don't have a free outside table so we decide to wait outside in the sunshine. We find a spot on the lawn and soak up the stunning scenery.

That's me (Kev) enjoying the view.

At 3pm we go back to the tasting room which is a large modern glass room overlooking the vines. We get the table we were promised and decide to try the family tasting. These are wines named after the vineyard owners' husband, wife, son and daughter. 2 whites and 2 reds. They're very nice and the guy telling us about them also gives us a small taste of 2 other reds before we decide which one to buy. We decide on Lucca as that's our favourite. The wind has quite a background bite to it when you're in the shade, so Tam asks for a wrap to keep warm. That fleecy blanket makes all the difference and she's happily snuggly as we finish our wine tasting.

Back on the HOHO bus and we pass through Hout Bay and past a township, which is fascinating if a little sad to see how poor some parts of South African society are. We get off the bus in Camps Bay to go to Mothers Milk to sit by the window for a couple of hours to watch the sunset. I assume this place is a little like a South African Wetherspoons as we see quite a few of them as we drive through various places and the food and drink are cheap with a small beer costing about £2. We split a chicken gyros and enjoy watching the beach with the surf really crashing in this evening. There's quite a few people on the beach watching the huge waves, but nobody actually swimming.

If I'm honest I don't think the Wetherspoons in Chippenham has a view like this.
We get an Uber back to Zest Boutique (£8) and are back in bed by 10.00 pm.
